How to get rid of bed bugs

Don’t be fooled; bed bugs are real. Undergoing a recent resurgence, bed bugs are more common than you think, and if left untreated can cause serious damage to you and your home. Unfortunately, there is no DIY home solution that will adequately get rid of bed bugs as well as not a lot of reliable information out there. If you do have bed bugs in your home, you need to call the pest professionals as soon as you detect them.

Identify the bed bug

As with anything, the first step toward getting rid of pests is to identify the exact type you are dealing with. Because pest control varies depending on the pest, ensure that you are certain you have bed bugs, and not another biting insect such as mites or fleas. As bed bugs are nocturnal, they only emerge from their hiding spots at night. As they stay hidden in cracks and crevices, usually around the bed, these pests are particularly hard to spot for the untrained eye.

Common signs of bed bugs include:

  • Dark stains on the mattress and surrounding area
  • An unpleasant, sweet, sickly scent
  • Small, dark, blood spots known as ‘faecal pellets’
  • Live insects, usually about 5mm long

Get the Professionals to assist

The only way to get rid of harmful bed bugs is to contact the pest professionals. If you do attempt a DIY solution, not only will this not be effective in the long term, but it may actually do more harm than good.

Not only does the specific room need to be treated, however all adjoining areas to the infested area need to be inspected and potentially treated, as well.
